
Opening of 2025 ID4Africa, Addis Ababa Ethiopia
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - World Privacy Forum is pleased to announce that it is chairing a full day privacy workshop at ID4Africa's 2025 AGM. The extended workshop is in two parts, and is focused on hearing the voices of African data protection authorities regarding identity systems and Data Protection Impact Assessments. Executive Director Pam Dixon will chair the workshop.
First Session: Roundtable of African Data Protection Authorities on the Status of ID Systems in Africa: For the first session of the workshop, the data protection authorities of Africa will gather in an invitation-only roundtable to discuss their analysis of the status of identity systems in their country regarding privacy and data protection. Data Protection Authorities and key staff from 29 countries will be present for this roundtable.
Second Session: Convening of African DPAs and Government Stakeholders on Data Protection Impact Assessments in Africa: For the second session, identity authorities and other government stakeholders will join the African Data Protection Authorities for an in-depth session on Data Protection Impact Assessments in the African context, hearing from the African Data Protection Authorities their best practices for DPIAs and engaging in discussion about challenging use cases in their jurisdictions.
This is the second major gathering of African DPAs at ID4Africa. The first roundtable was in 2019, when there were many fewer DPAs in Africa. For this workshop, More than 34 African countries will be represented during the day's events. This year's workshop will allow for the Data Protection Authorities to gather in person again, and will facilitate expanded coverage of critically important privacy topics in Africa.
