Digital Trade Rules, Digital Policy Norms, and Consequences for Economic Development
This roundtable discussion, Digital Trade Rules, Digital Policy Norms, and Consequences for Economic Development. is hosted by The Center for Global Development as part of its ongoing project on Governing Data for Development, of which WPF’s Pam Dixon is a co-chair. The participants will explore digital trade dynamics, data governance and privacy, economic development, and cross-border data flows.
Because of data’s borderless nature and the asymmetry of power in the global digital economy, the data governance choices made by a handful of jurisdictions – particularly, the European Union, United States, and, increasingly, China – strongly influence the set of policy options available to other countries. These major powers promote their digital policies abroad through trade agreements and mechanisms to determine the legality of cross-border data flows.
The event will take place Thursday, June 24, 8:00am to 10:00am EST, and is the second roundtable event in the CGD Working Group on Governing Data for Development, https://www.cgdev.org/working-group/governing-data-for-development .
The roundtable is by invitation only. A summary report will be made available after the event.
