FTC and Washington State Office of the Attorney General: Protecting Northwest Consumers, A Common Ground Conference — WPF speaker

WPF will be speaking at the joint FTC and Washington State AG consumer protection conference on the topic of privacy and vulnerable consumers. The conference will be held Thursday, December 12 -13, 2019 800 5th Ave., Suite 2000, Seattle, WA.

The Federal Trade Commission, the offices of the Attorneys General of Washington, Alaska and Idaho, the CFPB, the Northwest Justice Project, legal services attorneys and other consumer advocates, and state and federal consumer protection officials will be gathered at this event to discuss pressing issues facing consumers today. Topics include an overview of the consumer financial protection bureau, civil and criminal law, mortgage issues, debt collection and relief, debt settlement, auto sales and financing, and consumer protection issues and education for vulnerable populations. Conference participants will reflect upon experiences and challenges, make connections, and consider how groups can better collaborate and share information and resources in the future.

Session 2: Privacy, Data, and Vulnerable Consumers

In an increasingly digital economy, a consumer’s online activity can impact access to credit, jobs, housing, and more. The availability of consumer data profiles such as “surveillance scores” presents risks and challenges for particularly vulnerable consumers, including those living in poverty or fleeing violence. This panel will discuss what consumer advocates should be on the lookout for, with input from experts in policy, technology, and litigation.

New Report: Risky Analysis: Assessing and Improving AI Governance Tools

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new WPF report, “Risky Analysis: Assessing and Improving AI Governance Tools.” This report sets out a definition of AI governance tools, documents why and how these tools are critically important for trustworthy AI, and where these tools are around the world. The report also documents problems in some AI governance tools themselves, and suggests pathways to improve AI governance tools and create an evaluative environment to measure their effectiveness. AI systems should not be deployed without simultaneously evaluating the potential adverse impacts of such systems and mitigating their risks, and most of the world agrees about the need to take precautions against the threats posed. The specific tools and techniques that exist to evaluate and measure AI systems for their inclusiveness, fairness, explainability, privacy, safety and other trustworthiness issues — called in the report collectively AI governance tools – can improve such issues. While some AI governance tools provide reassurance to the public and to regulators, the tools too often lack meaningful oversight and quality assessments. Incomplete or ineffective AI governance tools can create a false sense of confidence, cause unintended problems, and generally undermine the promise of AI systems. The report contains rich background details, use cases, potential solutions to the problems discussed in the report, and a global index of AI Governance Tools.
