EConsumer.Gov: Improved and updated multi-national consumer complaint website
At the World Privacy Forum, consumers frequently approach us and ask us where they can complain about privacy and security issues. It is not unusual for us to hear about issues like online scams and phishing schemes that cross country borders. The Econsumer.gov website is designed to help consumers with exactly these sorts of issues. The website is run by the The International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN) — which is a collaboration of the US Federal Trade Commission and consumer protection agencies from 33 countries.
After languishing for some time, the Econsumer.gov website has been relaunched and is much improved. It is now an efficient multi-national consumer complaint site, and it is mobile-friendly. US consumers who write in a complaint to EConsumer.gov will have their complaints also filed in the US FTC’s Consumer Sentinel database. The complaints sent to EConsumer.gov will be made available to enforcers and regulators in countries with participating agencies. According to the FTC’s post about the updated consumer site, Those agencies may use the complaints to:
- Investigate cross-border issues,
- uncover new scams,
- pursue regulatory or enforcement actions,
- spot consumer trends.
Econsumer.gov is available in eight languages: English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Spanish, and Turkish.
