Interactive Medical Data Breaches Map
Note: The medical data breach map has been updated. Please visit the new page at: https://www.worldprivacyforum.org/2016/09/2016-breach-interactive/
January, 2019.
This interactive map shows medical data breaches in the US from 2009-2012.
How to read the map:
Each blue dot represents a medical data breach. The size of the dot corresponds to the size of the breach. Bigger dot = bigger breach.
How to see more details in the map:
- Mouse over the blue dots to see the names of the hospitals or institutions that had the breach. You will also see the date of the breach, number of people affected, and type of breach (for example, theft, or hacking).
- Use the drop down menu to choose a state. The map will zoom to the state.
- Click the Zoom Out link to return to the main map view.
Research data:
This data visualization is based on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services raw data set of breaches affecting 500 or more individuals. The dates visualized on this map are from data breaches that have been reported to HHS from 2009-2012. The HITECH Act § 13402(e)(4) requires the Secretary of HHS to post a list of breaches of unsecured Protected Health Information (PHI) affecting 500 or more individuals. The raw data is available here, and is maintained and updated by HHS.
